{Ceramics 2} Focus/Closure
Write down the steps for Sgraffito:
1. Make sure clay is leather hard (but not too dry) so that the clay can hold it's shape when you are applying pressure to it.
2. Transferring your design: (tile) Use tracing paper to trace your design and then with a pencil etch it into your tile. (pot) Use pencil to lightly draw in design. You need to lightly indent your design into the pot/tile before applying the underglaze.
3. "Apply 2-3 coats of underglaze, apply additional coats in alternate
directions, and wait to dry before starting the scratching-off process.
The tools and the pressure you decide to use is dependent on the affect
you wish to see on the clay. If looking for rougher surface texture,
push the tool a bit harder and take more material using more pointy
tools. Scratches can have uniform or random patterns. NOTE: Only use a soft dry brush to remove debris to avoid damaging the colored areas."
4. Allow tile or pot to dry for firing.
5. After first firing, apply a clear glaze and fire again.
