{Ceramics 1} Focus/Closure for Thursday, 9/26

{Ceramics 1}
9/26/13

Focus:  (Write down notes.  You may summarize.)

**Firing Process**
A ceramic piece will normally be fired twice.  First firing is called a Bisque firing.  Second firing, is called a glaze firing.  Additional glaze firings are done for specific effects.

Clay that has not been fired is known as greenware.
Clay that has been fired without glaze is known as bisqueware.
Clay that has been fired with glaze is known as glazeware.

Objectives:

*Symmetrical and Organic Pinch Pots should be finished.
*Continue working on Themed Pinch Pot with Lid.

Closure:

Bisque Firing:  Changes the structure of the clay into ceramic.   You can no longer recycle clay after it has been fired.  Ceramic pieces can be stacked on top of one another in kiln.

Glaze Firing:  After bisque firing, the ceramic piece is glazed and placed in the kiln for one more firing. Ceramic pieces can not be stacked on top of one another in kiln because they will stick together.
