Bat - A flat disc made out of plaster, wood, or plastic which is affixed to the wheel head with clay or pins. Bats are used to throw pieces on that would be difficult to lift off the wheel head.

Objectives:  
*complete slab box
*work on final project
*recycle clay
*Glaze after January 14th.
 
Requirements for final project--
1.  7 inches tall 
2. incorporate coil and/or slab to pinch pot.
3.  should show 2 out of this list:

Wheel on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday (You must do all three days in a row, no excuses--unless not at school):

Focus:   (Write definition down.)
Centering: The process of applying pressure to a lump of clay on  a spinning wheel head to position it for even rotation.

Please write this down, too.  January 14th is the last day we will work with wet clay.  After that your work will be fired and you will focus on glazing all of your work.  We will also be working on studio maintenance.

Objectives:  *Coil pot should be finished, if it is not, please complete it.  *Tripod Pot, if it is not, please complete it. *Begin/continue Slab Box. *Learn how to use slab roller.

Bring old clothes for Monday, hair ties, and change of shoes (if needed).

When joining your pieces to your slab box, first make sure your slabs are stiff and that they are even. Stand up your pieces and make sure they are flush with the slab it will be attached to. When joining slabs score and slip and then support each joint with a coil. Be sure to smooth the coil out.





Objectives:  *Coil pot should be finished, if it is not, please complete it.  *Begin/finish Tripod Pot  (due tomorrow). *Begin/continue Slab Box. *Learn how to use slab roller.

Closure:  Do you decorate your slabs for your box before or after you create the box?  Answer:  BEFORE you create the box!

Today and Tomorrow, I will be grading sketchbooks!  If you are behind, work on them during the closure time period.

Slab roller:  a piece of equipment that will roll out slabs of clay for you.  Please make sure that the two silver knobs are set to a 1/4 of an inch for your slab boxes (if you need help with this, please let me know).

When recycling clay always use the WOODEN rib only to scrape the excess clay off table and hands.

Texture: The way a surface feels or looks to you.  ie.  A kitten feels and looks soft and fluffy. However, a painting of a kitten would only look fluffy.

Focus:  
Steps for making Tripod Pot:

1.  Roll out a slab of clay.
2.  Cut out a rectangle.
3.  Add texture now, unless you want to add texture later when the pot is leatherhard.
4.  Cut edges at a 45 degree angle.
5.  Score and slip edges of rectangle.
6.  Connect edges.
7.  Score and slip the top of the tube.
8.  Make a triangle with the top of the clay tube and slowing start pinching in.
9.  Pinch in until it looks like three legs.
10. Keep the pot upside down as the three legs dry up over night.

 Objectives:

*GLAZE.

*Continue/Finish Coil Pot

*Begin/Continue Tripod Pot 

*Learn how to use the slab roller

Closure:  

Reminder: Coil Pot requirements--6 inches, smooth either inside or outside walls (you may smooth out both), negative space, relief or etching

1.  Create another pot that is similar to the pot you just made. Examples: pinch pot, coil pot, tripod pot, slab, wheel
2.  Create a pendant from a slab of clay for a necklace.
3.  Create a decorative tile.
4.  Create a series of coasters for home.
5.  Create a clay animal.
6.  Draw or write creatively in your sketchbook.

If you are finished with your Sgraffito pots and tile/pendant, you may create some texture clay spheres or you may create a stamp with your name or initials on it.

Directions:  Create a round ball of clay about the size of a bouncy ball and stamp texture into the clay. Try also creating stamps. Put on shelf to dry.
